But a reading of the text and a closer examination of the illustrations reveal that what makes this yoga text different and worthwhile is the author's commitment to tying yoga's spiritual aspects to its physical components. Farhi (The Breathing Book) discusses the "Ten Living Principles," or the yamas ("wise characteristics") and the niyamas ("codes for living soulfully"), and also considers the importance of the asanas ("postures") in grounding spirituality in the body. However, Farhi does far more than provide descriptions and illustrations of postures. At the beginning of each new section, she has readers move through one or two core poses. She then asks them to focus on the way they feel physically while performing the pose. Using these core poses, she moves on to postures of greater complexity while allowing for different levels of ability. One possible problem for beginners is her use of posture names to describe poses that involve movement from one posture to the next (e.g., the sun salutation or the downward dog). About the Author

Dorinda Neave is a senior lecturer in Art History at Capilano University, North Vancouver, Canada. Dorinda received a B.A. from Manchester University U.K. and a post-graduate certificate in Education from Keele University, U.K. before completing an M.A at the University of Victoria, Canada. She currently teaches courses in visual culture and Asian art at Capilano University. Her research interests include contemporary Japanese performance art and women in Japanese art as artists, patrons and subjects. Neave’s articles have been published in a variety of journals such as Art Journal and Woman’s Art Journal. She has traveled widely throughout Japan and in 2009 was a summer visiting scholar at Nichibunken (International Research Centre for Japanese Studies) in Kyoto.

 

Lara C. W. Blanchard is Luce Associate Professor of East Asian Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York, where she teaches courses in art history, Asian studies, and women’s studies. She received a B.A. from the College of William & Mary and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Her research interests focus on Chinese pictorial arts, especially of the Song through Ming dynasties (960-1644) and the contemporary era, and include women as artists and patrons, the construction of gender, text-image relationships, and theories of representation. Her articles have appeared in journals such as Ars Orientalis and Nan Nü: Men, Women and Gender in China. She has traveled throughout mainland China and studied Chinese art, language, and calligraphy in Taipei.

 

Marika Sardar is Associate Curator of Southern Asian and Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art. Marika studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU where she completed a doctoral dissertation on the architecture of Golconda, a fortified city in the Deccan, India. She has also worked in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and her research has embraced architecture, archaeology, painting, textiles, and trade. Publications include essays in several books about the Deccan and in the catalogue The Interwoven Globe: Worldwide Textile Trade, 1500–1800 (2013). She was co-editor of Sultans of the South: Arts of India’s Deccan Courts, 1323-1687 (2011).

If you had college level statistics this book could serve as a half decent refresher.But if you are like me and only have basic high school stat-related stuff (basic probability etc), the book becomes frustrating at less than half its lenght because the formulas and concepts start to become more complex are not explained well enough via cartoonish style. The book then becomes annoying and irritating because one formula/concept piles on top of the previous one and from there it is all downhill, at which point I just gave up and will appeal to a more rigorous book which takes its time to explain carefully each point.

This book is terrible on kindle. You can not enlarge it, you can barely see the words. Worst money ever spent. I can't say if the book is any good BECAUSE I CANT SEE IT

Bought this for my 18 year old daughter. She didn't find the content particularly helpful. But she also found the author/illustrator "cringy." On the back of our edition it advertised other books by Larry Gonick, one of which was an illustrated sex guide which reminded me of Mad Magazine style cartooning. She refused to be seen carrying a book with this image on its back cover by "some cringy old perv from the 60's." I was looking for an alternative and perhaps fun way to supplement her statistics class, but this was not it.

Hypothesis: there is a chance that this is the first statistics book that you (Sherlock?) will read from cover-to-cover. Why? The distribution of humor looks good. Meaning that humor is well distributed throughout this book; highly biased towards good jokes, you may find some lame-ish stuff, though. The confidence interval for “good jokes” depends on your erudition/personality, Sherlock. We can use “paired comparisons” between this book and other textbooks as well. But I will leave it as an exercise for the reader who dared to read other statistics books. One thing is certain, Larry has been getting better over time. This book was published in 1993 and a few weeks ago I read his book on Calculus published in 2011. To conclude he has evolved exponentially as a cartoonist and teacher.

This book has been my go to refresher on probability and statistics for many years now whenever I need to remember something. It is a very simple and fun introduction to many concepts that are important to our every day lives. Yet, it also gets fairly in depth into statistical concepts. The reason I gave he book 4 stars instead of 5 though is that there are places where even the cartoons jump a little too fast for my speed and I need to refer to other resources to fully understand the concept. But, I’ve yet to find a simpler, more accessible statistics book.

Won't pretend to know enough about statistics to claim any expertise, either before OR after reading this book. Nonetheless, I found it very illuminating on several of the basics. Statistics is a quirky little branch of mathematics, with perhaps more than its fair share of counterintuitive phenomena, and a gentle introduction like this one can be very helpful in both revealing and clarifying the finer points: how probability works, and DOESN'T, contrary to some reasonable perceptions; the difference between a mean and a median, and why "average" might not mean what you think it means; and one or two other intriguing phenomena along the way.Originally published in 1993, the 2005 edition remains largely the same, with a few minor revisions. Other, more recent guides may offer a more up-to-date perspective, but by and large, I'd say this classic little Gonick & Smith collaboration still offers a worth introduction.

I've owned this book for a long time and I regularly use it to learn new concepts I need to understand. I also use it as a reference for things I've learned previously but have forgotten a bit. It works for me, but I could see how it may not work for others.If you're looking for a text book with lots of examples, then this is not your book. If you need someone else to guide you and explain things to you, then this is not your book. This book is about explaining the concepts concisely & simply with real life examples. But just because it's concise, it doesn't mean it's simple. You will need to study.This book is all about explaining the ideas of stats simply, and it's done with cartoon figures and down to earth examples. Nothing abstract here. Each section is concise and brief. Everything you need for each step is clearly explained and with a little study, graspable. Each section is carefully built on top of the previous one, so because of this grading learning there is never a large leap to a new concept.I would recommend the book for someone who has previously studied Stats, but needs a quick review.I would recommend it for use as a quick reference tool. It's easy to find what you want, and since the explanations are brief, you don't need to spend a lot of time in research.
